We’re here for the culture, we ain’t trying to be cocky.

Rooster Records is an independent label born from the underground doof scene of Tākaka and the wider Mohua region, forged in late night recording sessions, questionable sleep schedules, and a shared love for Aotearoa’s sound system culture.
What began as Hip Hop cyphers in a living room quickly evolved into something bigger: a collective response to the sheer amount of underground talent thriving just below the surface, waiting for a platform.Rooted in community and driven by a DIY ethos, Rooster Records exists to look after the flock. The label started with Hip Hop at its core, but as the vision grew, so did the sound.
Today, Rooster champions a broad spectrum of underground music across Bass, Hip Hop, and club-adjacent genres, all united by a deep connection to place, people, and sound system energy. Think Top of the South valley doofs, Roots Bar grit, Cobb Valley bass pressure, and the unmistakable pulse of the Aotearoa underground.At its heart, Rooster Records is about creating stepping stones: helping artists move from bedroom production to the next stage of their journey. The label values mahi, authenticity, and belief in one’s own sound, pairing high standards with genuine care for the community that raised it.
